Flying with the dog for the first time

What you actually need for flying with the dog — 5 things to cover, each with a pick.

An airline-compliant carrier

This is the item people get wrong. A carrier that is an inch too tall gets refused at the gate, and there is no fixing it at that point.

What to check
  • Get your airline's under-seat dimensions in writing first, then match the carrier to them
  • Soft-sided squashes to fit; hard-sided does not

An absorbent liner and spares

Long waits and delays happen. A liner you can swap turns an accident into two minutes rather than a whole flight.

What to check
  • Check the size matches the carrier base
  • Buy more than one - the point of it is having a dry one to swap in

A collapsible bowl

Water matters more than food on a travel day, and airports have taps but not bowls. A collapsible one lives in a pocket.

What to check
  • Check it clips to a bag and that it is actually stable when full - the very soft ones tip

3 options — pick the one that fits, then tap through for the current price on Amazon.

A harness and a short lead

Security will ask you to take the dog out of the carrier. Doing that in a crowded hall with only a collar is how dogs get loose.

What to check
  • Check the harness cannot be backed out of
  • A short lead is safer than a retractable one in a terminal

Their own blanket or a worn shirt

Familiar smell is the cheapest calming tool there is, and it works better than most things sold for the purpose.

What to check
  • Nothing to check here beyond size - it needs to fit the carrier without filling it
  • Wash it after, not before
